On Wednesday my friend Jay and I went for an epic paddle on the Kohala Coast. We started at Makaiwa Bay and paddled north to Hapuna Bay and back. Nice and flat waters for the first half of the trip, with a slight breeze at our back. Getting into Hapuna was tricky because there was a nice size shore break, surfing displacement hull boards over 12' in length is a challenge. On the way back we came across three manta rays and took a small break to sit on our boards nearby. The paddle south proved to be real work with 15 knot headwinds and sloppy ocean conditions. 10.15 miles total. The Hawaiian waters were crystal clear, with 60 plus feet of visibility underneath us. Beautiful day on the Big Island.
